New Pope Selected Tuesday 19 2004

German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was selected today to become Pope Benedict XVI. After two Days of voting, white smoke billowed out and the large crowd of people outside the Vatican cheered. About an hour later he came on the balcony and blessed the crowd. Pope Benedict XVI is the 265th pope.
